The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks
This books follows after The Sword of Shannara and as I started by writing reviews for Terry Brooks, I will continue by writing one for The Elfstones of Shannara. It is the second Fantasy book I read and the second one Terry Brooks published so I would recommend that you read this one second.
Wil Ohmsford is the grandson of Shea Omhsford and has inherited the three blue elfsones that he was given by the druid Allanon in the previous book The Sword of Shannara. The Ellcrys, a magical tree of the Elves is dying and a quest is undertaken by one of the caretakers, Amberle, to save it. Together they must locate a certain place within the Four Lands before the Demons invade the lands.
I read this book not long after reading The Sword of Shannara and I don’t mind admitting that it took me awhile to get into it. I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as the first book, the characters didn’t really work for me. It is still incredibly detailed and I love the descriptions Terry Brooks uses, it delves deeper into the history of the elves and broadens the world he has created, creating depth into the Four Lands, its history and creation. It has been awhile since I have read this but I do seem to remember it does get a bit repetitive and tedious in spots. Still an enjoyable read though.
After writing The Sword of Shannara Terry Brooks began working on his second book soon after. He finished it in 1980 and it was published in 1982. Brooks was still working in Law at this point and wrote around his law practice. Brooks does seem to make more effort into creating his own world and less like a re-make of The Lord of the Rings and in that I think he does mostly succeed in doing.
Who should read this book?
If you enjoy The Sword of Shannara, then you will probably enjoy this book. The characters to me were a little more basic and cookie cutter, no quite having the depth I would prefer. They seem a little less human without the flaws that were more present in the original books characters.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars simply because I didn’t really like it as much as The Sword of Shannara. Its is still a good read and if you like Terry Brooks then you should enjoy this as well.
