The Wishsong of Shannara by Terry Brooks

The third book of the Shannara series and out of all the books probably the one I liked least. Read it if you must. If you like Terry Brooks, you might enjoy this. Personally out of all the books, this is the one I’d skip completely and ignore the fact it exists. It doesn’t really add anything to the Four Lands world, except about the best thing in this book, the Moor cats.

Summary

Jair and Brin Ohmsford are the children of Wil Ohmsford from The Elfstones of Shannara. Using the Elfstones means that his children has inherited the use of magic in the form of song. Brin can use the power of song, she can make whatever she wishes happen. A gift that can be used for good, or for bad. Jair however only has the gift of song to create illusions. Together they must find a way to work together to defeat the magic in an ancient tome called the Ildatch

Review

Out of all the Terry Brooks books I’ve read (yes this does include the Magic Kingdom for sale/sold) this is probably the one I liked least. This is probably because of some of the dubious nature Brin uses her magic for. Subcoming to the ‘dark side’ as it were. Leaving her brother to come after her using the force of love to bring her back from the brink. Is it me or does that sound a bit like Starwars? The whole book is fully of foreboding and really, it gets a bit much after a while. Normally I rather like Terry Brooks use of descriptions and the details he creates but this book just takes it a bit far. I didn’t really like either Brin or Jair and none of the characters are really all that well-developed, the whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth and on the whole I was disappointed.

Background info

After finishing The Sword of Shannara in 1977 and The Elfstone of Shannara in 1982, Brooks went on to write The Wishsong of Shannara which was published in 1985.  Terry Brooks did not stop working in his law practice until after he’d written his sixth books,m so he still would have been working in law while writing this book.

Who should read this book?

If your a devoted fan of Terry Brooks then by all means read it, I didn’t personally much like it but maybe you will. It had some better moments and good parts but I didn’t much enjoy this book,

I’m giving it only 3 stars.
